Structural Revamp: Transforming Our Home, One Support at a Time
When we moved into our new house, there were a few pressing projects that demanded our attention, and the supports for the 3 season room topped the list. During the inspection, it became evident that one of the 3 lally columns supporting the room was badly rusted, and another had been substituted with an adjustable support column at some point. Despite the seller’s reluctance to negotiate, we knew we had to address this issue sooner rather than later.
At first, we thought we could handle the replacement ourselves, but as we delved deeper into the matter, we realized it was beyond our DIY capabilities. We decided to seek advice from the local authorities and get in touch with a reputable contractor. A close friend recommended Matthew Hanchett from MH Construction, who had done an impressive job renovating his rental property.
Matthew worked closely with us to design a solid plan and wasted no time getting started. Alongside his skilled son, they tackled the project with enthusiasm and professionalism. As they removed the ceiling’s plywood sheets, they uncovered evidence of a severe rodent infestation, which meant removing the insulation. The side boards were in a sorry state too, so they skillfully added new ones and reinforced them alongside the existing boards. The addition of new insulation ensured that the room would be comfortable all year round.
Next came the important task of digging the footings, setting the brackets, and installing the sturdy 6×6 supports. To reinforce the structure further, they added new 2x12s on either side of the 6x6s and secured everything with robust bolts. The finished ceiling looked fantastic with its newly added trim, giving the room a fresh and modern touch.
With the 3 season room now structurally sound, we are thrilled to start putting the pavers back in place and make plans to expand the deck above. Thanks to Matthew’s expertise and hard work, we can confidently enjoy our beautiful renovated space, knowing it is safe and built to last.
Undertaking this renovation project has been an eye-opening experience, teaching us the importance of having reliable professionals by our side. It has also reminded us that some tasks are best left to experts, and that’s okay! If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, don’t hesitate to seek advice from professionals like Matthew Hanchett. Trust us; it’s worth it! Here’s to more exciting home improvement adventures in the future!
